Should I pay for email hosting or attempt to host my website and email my own? How much will I save?
I plan on getting about 10,000 hits a month on my website.
I would definitely pay for hosting. You can get good, reliable hosting for around $5.00 a month from godaddy.com, 1and1.com, and many others. 10,000 hits per month should not be a problem for basic hosting plans from these sites.
Hosting your own site is very complicated and expensive.

If you're talking your own e-mail needs, AOL and AIM are both free now, provided you have a seperate internet connection.
I have a domain and hosting (including hundreds of e-mail boxes) through Dreamhost at $8 a month…I believe there are even cheaper plans available. Dreamhost raises server space, bandwidth and pretty much everything else…every month. I have way more room than I'll ever need and it keeps growing.
10k hits doesn't sound like a big deal for a commercial site, so most plans should cover your needs.
It's the internet connection that's expensive, lol. $30 a month for DSL, before gobs of fees and taxes are tagged on. e.e

If you were to host it yourself you would need 2 name servers(or at least 1 with 2 IP's or use someones) to resolve the name to an IP address
So yeah, GoDaddy or Dreamhost
